Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori has written to the Health Secretary to address the growing concern over abuse of Pregabalin drug in the region. This medication, used to manage pain and seizures, has become easily accessible and is being misused, leading to addiction, said the DC.

Thori highlighted that Pregabalin’s effects are comparable to heroin, with users becoming slowly dependent on it. He added that addicts are consuming up to 10 tablets daily, far exceeding the recommended dosage, and purchasing them illegally at exorbitant prices.

To combat this issue, the Deputy Commissioner recommended implementing strict guidelines for prescribing Pregabalin, regulating the drug as a controlled substance, involving healthcare providers in monitoring and education, conducting a scientific social media campaign, mandatory half hour de-addiction training programmes in educational institutions and monitoring and regulating the distribution of Pregabalin, Tramadol and Tapentadol.

He also advised establishing long-term rehabilitation programmes for permanent de-addiction. The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the need for immediate action to prevent further drug abuse and protect the well-being of citizens.
